Foldable Phone: Benefits, Challenges and the iPhone Duo

For years, foldable phones have promised something traditional smartphones cannot easily deliver: a larger screen without carrying a larger device all the time.

Samsung, Huawei, HONOR, OPPO and other manufacturers have spent years developing foldable smartphones, gradually improving their displays, hinges, durability and software. Now, Apple has officially entered the market with the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone.

Unveiled on September 9, 2026, iPhone Duo opens from a compact 5.4-inch outer display into a 7.6-inch inner display. It starts at $1,999 with 256GB of storage and is available with up to 2TB of storage. More importantly, Apple is not simply bringing an iPhone into an existing foldable design. It is trying to address some of the compromises that have defined foldable phones for years.

So, what makes foldable phones attractive in the first place, what problems have they struggled with, and how does iPhone Duo attempt to move the category forward?

Why Are Foldable Phones So Appealing?

The basic idea behind a foldable phone is surprisingly simple: one device can work as both a smartphone and a larger-screen device.

When folded, iPhone Duo has a 5.4-inch outer display for everyday tasks such as messaging, calling, browsing and taking quick photos. Open it, and the 7.6-inch inner display provides significantly more space for watching videos, gaming, reading, multitasking and productivity.

This is the fundamental advantage of foldable technology. Instead of choosing between a compact smartphone and a larger tablet-like device, users can carry both experiences in one product.

The larger screen can also create new ways to use a phone. A foldable device can be partially opened for hands-free video calls, used as its own stand, or take advantage of two displays for photography and other interactive experiences.

That flexibility is what makes foldable phones fundamentally different from simply making a traditional smartphone larger.

The Trade-Offs Behind Foldable Phones

However, folding a smartphone introduces a completely new set of engineering challenges.

The first is the display crease. Unlike conventional smartphone screens, a foldable OLED display must repeatedly bend along the same area. Even as manufacturers have made creases less visible, the folding area has remained one of the most recognizable compromises of foldable phones.

Then there is durability. A traditional smartphone has no display hinge and no flexible screen that needs to withstand repeated folding. A foldable phone has both, creating additional mechanical and structural complexity.

Thickness and weight are another challenge. A foldable phone needs to accommodate two display sections, a hinge, batteries and other components inside a body that is still expected to fit comfortably in a pocket.

Finally, there is the software problem. A larger display does not automatically make a better experience. Apps need to adapt to different screen sizes, orientations and folding states. Without proper software optimization, a foldable phone can feel like a conventional smartphone interface simply stretched across a larger screen.

These compromises explain why foldable phones have remained a premium category rather than completely replacing conventional smartphones.

How Is iPhone Duo Tackling These Problems?

Apple's approach with iPhone Duo is less about inventing the basic foldable concept and more about reducing the compromises that come with it.

One of the clearest examples is the inner display. iPhone Duo uses a special nano-texture finish that reduces glare and reflections while also making the crease less noticeable. Apple has also redesigned the hinge to support the center of the display and help it remain flat when opened. The hinge contains more than 100 components and is designed to control the opening and closing movement precisely.

Durability has also received considerable attention. iPhone Duo uses a Grade 5 titanium frame, Ceramic Shield 2 on the outer display, reinforced internal structures and an inner display with multiple protective layers. Apple also gives the phone an IP68 rating for splash, water and dust resistance — an important step toward making a foldable phone feel more like a conventional flagship in everyday use.

Apple has also focused heavily on the physical proportions of the device. When open, iPhone Duo is just 5.2 mm thick and weighs 254 grams. When closed, it measures 11.3 mm thick. The 5.4-inch outer display also provides 90% of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro, meaning Apple is not treating the outside screen as merely a secondary display.

The Bigger Change May Be the Software

Perhaps the most important part of Apple's approach is not the hinge or the display, but how the hardware and software work together.

Both iPhone Duo displays use the same aspect ratio, allowing content to scale proportionally between the folded and unfolded states. iOS 27 has also been redesigned specifically for the foldable form factor, allowing the interface to react as the device opens, closes and changes orientation.

Apple is taking advantage of the larger display with features such as Split View, which allows two apps to run side by side, as well as the ability to open two windows of the same app. Apps including Netflix, Zoom and Slack are also being optimized for the larger screen.

This is important because a successful foldable phone cannot simply be a phone with a folding screen. The software needs to make the transition between phone mode and large-screen mode feel natural.

That is one of the areas where Apple's control over both hardware and software could give iPhone Duo an advantage.

The Camera Is Another Area Where Folding Becomes a Feature

Apple is also using the folding design to change how the camera works.

With the outer display acting as a preview screen, users can take selfies with the higher-resolution rear cameras while looking at themselves on the outside display. The device can also be partially folded and positioned on a surface, reducing the need for a separate tripod in some situations.

iPhone Duo includes a 48MP Fusion Main camera with an optical-quality 2x Telephoto function, a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera and new camera experiences specifically enabled by the dual-screen design. Apple also introduces features such as Duo Preview, Dual Capture in FaceTime and Smart Take.

This represents a broader evolution of foldable phones: the folding mechanism is no longer only about making the screen bigger; it can also change how the phone itself is used.

Has iPhone Duo Solved the Problems of Foldable Phones?

Not completely.

Apple has made significant progress, but the fundamental trade-offs of foldable technology have not disappeared.

The most obvious issue is price. iPhone Duo starts at $1,999, making it considerably more expensive than conventional flagship smartphones. Storage options extend from 256GB to 2TB, further increasing the price at the top end.

There is also the question of size and weight. Although Apple calls iPhone Duo its thinnest iPhone when unfolded, the device weighs 254 grams and is 11.3 mm thick when closed. That means the phone still has to make a compromise between a large internal display and comfortable portability.

The crease has not technically disappeared either. Apple has designed the display and its nano-texture layer to minimize crease visibility, rather than eliminating the physical folding point altogether. Durability has been improved, but a flexible display and complex hinge will inevitably remain more mechanically complicated than a conventional flat smartphone.

In other words, iPhone Duo does not eliminate the compromises of foldable phones. It attempts to make those compromises less noticeable and less disruptive to everyday use.

What Does iPhone Duo Mean for the Future of Foldable Phones?

Apple's entry into the foldable market is significant because it comes after years of experimentation by other manufacturers.

The company is not the first to create a book-style foldable, a large inner display, a sophisticated hinge or foldable-specific software. Instead, iPhone Duo represents Apple's attempt to take technologies that have already been developed across the industry and integrate them into a more unified product.

Its biggest contribution may therefore be refinement rather than reinvention.

A good foldable phone needs to satisfy two conflicting requirements: it must remain convenient enough to use as a smartphone, while providing a genuinely useful larger screen when opened. At the same time, it needs to minimize the traditional drawbacks of foldables — visible creases, complicated hinges, durability concerns, excessive thickness, high weight and inconsistent software experiences.

iPhone Duo shows how manufacturers are moving toward that goal.

The future of foldable phones will not simply be about making screens fold. It will be about making the folding itself feel necessary, useful and natural.

And with iPhone Duo, Apple has now entered that race.
